Kathmandu district sees enthusiastic nomination
Kathmandu, May 2: Different political parties and independent candidates on Tuesday have enthusiastically registered their candidatures in the country capital, Kathmandu, for first phase of civic polls scheduled for coming May 14.
The first phase election is taking place in 283 local levels of 34 districts under the province 3,4 and 6. To that end, the Election Commission had set time (10.00 am to 5.00 pm) Monday for filing candidacies from the respective parties and independent manner.
Thousands of candidates had registered their candidatures for total 712 posts including Mayor, Deputy Mayor and members in one Metropolitan City and 10 municipalities of Kathmandu.
The Regional Election Office Kathmandu shared that there are total 138 wards in Kathmandu Metropolis and other municipalities including Nagarjun, Shankharapur, Gokarneswor, Dakshinkali, Tarakeswor, Kageswori, Chandragiri, Tokha, Kirtipur and Budhanilakantha.
Kathmandu district sees registration of the highest number of 47 political parties. Various political parties including Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist Centre and Rastriya Prajatantra Party had filed candidacy at all levels of the district.
A large section of people with candidates and their well wishers thronged the Office of Chief Election Officer and 10 Offices of Election Officers in the district. Kathmandu district has the highest number of polling centres (686) and voters (559,400), according to the Election Commission.
Candidacies for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor have been filed in four metropolitan cities, one sub-metropolitan city and 92 municipalities under three provinces today.
Candidates of major political parties
Nepali Congress has fielded Raju Raj Joshi and Hari Prava Khadgi as Mayoral and Deputy Mayoral candidates in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City respectively.
Similarly, CPN (UML) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party have forged alliance for the same. The CPN (UML) has presented Bidya Sundar Shakya to the post of Mayor and Raja Ram Shrestha as deputy mayor from RPP.
Likewise, Sarbottam Dongol and Sushila Poudel from CPN (Maoist Centre) have filed their candidacies to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively. RSS
