Sher Bahadur Deuba elected Prime Minister

Kathmandu, June 6: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has been elected the 40th Prime Minister of Nepal.
In the election held for the post of the new prime minister at the Legislature-Parliament today, Mr Deuba, who was the lone candidate for the post, was elected with 388 votes. The election was held on the basis of a majority after a consensus was not achieved as per the provision of the constitution. A total of 170 MPs voted against him.
Among the 593 MPs in the parliament, 558 MPs took part in the voting today.
Earlier, incumbent Prime Minister and CPN (MC) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ had tabled a proposal seeking election of NC leader Deuba as the next Prime Minister. Deuba received support from the current ruling parties CPN (MC) and NC as well as from RPP, RJP, Nepal Democratic Forum, Federal Socialist Forum, Socialist Janata Dal, Akhanda Nepal Party and CPN (united). Those voting against Deuba were CPN-UML, CPM-ML, Rastriya Janamorcha, and Pariwar Dal.
Speaker Onsari Gharti read out the result of the voting held through division of votes, which then led MPs throng Deuba to garland and congratulate him.
The next meeting of the parliament is scheduled for 1:00 pm on June 8. RSS
