KATHMANDU, Oct 16: UCPN (Maoist) leader and former deputy speaker of Constituent Assembly Onsari Gharti Magar has been elected as the first female speaker of parliament in the history of the country.
Magar was elected unopposed after her contender Anuradha Thapa of Nepal Workers Peasants Party pulled out her candidacy.

Magar’s candidacy was proposed by Bidya Devi Bhandari and seconded by Kunti Sahi.
Three major political parties—Nepali Congress, CPN UML and UCPN (Maoist)—have supported Magar as the parliament speaker.
Earlier, Nepali Congress had decided not to field candidate for the post and issued a whip to its parliamentarians to support Magar in the election.
